I have been following the BBC’s programmes When I Get Older, Respect Your Elders and The Town that Never Retired with some interest.  In particular, the problems encountered by the pensioners, their families and carers; the concerns they have and prejudices they face, are something which we, as Solicitors for the Elderly, are only too familiar with at SRB LLP.

Initially I was in two minds as to whether or not I wanted to watch these programmes, after all, nobody likes to think about what happens when we become older or, God forbid, incapable – such topics are things we would all rather not think about unless we have to.

But I speak with Clients on a daily basis about Lasting Powers of Attorney, and whenever somebody tells me that; “I’m not at that stage of life yet” or “I’ll think about if my mind goes”, I remind them that everyone, irrespective of their age or situation, should be thinking about making a Lasting Powers of Attorney.  When all is said and done, it is not about losing control… making the right preparations is about maintaining our independence in life, is a situation we should all strive to achieve.
