August looks like being a busy time in employment law as the Government’s consultation on changes to the modern workplace come to a close. Key items under consideration and being proposed include:
- A new system of flexible parental leave, allowing unpaid leave for fathers to attend antenatal appointments, an 18 week period of maternity leave and a new 34 week period of shared parental leave;
- Extending the right to request flexible working to all employees; and
- Rescheduling or carrying over annual leave in circumstances where a worker has been unable to take leave due to absence on maternity, adoption, parental or paternity leave or is unable to take leave due to illness or falls sick during scheduled annual leave
